CrossFit Del Mar - Company Bio

CrossFit Del Mar was founded in July of 2011 and is an official affiliate of CrossFit Inc. Since the day we opened we have been committed to helping our local military community as part of everyday business.

The business owners, Kim Bono, and Mark and Esther Marek, all have deep ties to the military community in general and the U.S. Marine Corps specifically.

Kim's father, "Big Joe" Donlon, served in the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton, Twenty Nine Palms, and Quantico, Va in the 1950's. "Big Joe" impressed upon Kim the Marine Corps ethos of fitness and hard work. This work ethic has served Kim well as evidenced by a lifetime of fitness accomplishments which eventually led her to be the founding member of CrossFit Del Mar. Extremely athletic in all organized school sports activities, Kim was a Massachusetts State High School soccer scoring champion. Kim went on to Collegiate level swimming, soccer, and basketball. Kim and "Big Joe" are both members of the Winchester, Mass High School Sports Hall of Fame. Kim is a certified California public school P.E. teacher and she holds virtually every CrossFit teaching credential available. This background has uniquely prepared her for great accomplishments supporting our military members and working with the Marine Corps Wounded Warriors at CrossFit Del Mar. Kim has spent hundreds of hours coaching and teaching Wounded Warriors the CrossFit fitness philosophy and methodology with selfless compassion and dedication.

Mark retired as a LtCol from the Marine Corps with over 23 years of service. He enlisted in the Marine Corps out of high school, attained the rank of Sgt, and then received a commission as a 2nd Lt via the Enlisted Commissioning Program. He went on to become a Naval Aviator and flew the EA-6B, A-6E, and F/A-18D. Esther, as the wife of a career Marine, served in numerous roles and capacities helping establish many of the spouse support programs that exist today. This was in addition to raising two children during Mark's five overseas deployments. Esther has a keen understanding of Marine Corps family life, challenges, and is sensitive to the needs and concerns of the military community.

The combination of the above life experiences represent the underlying foundation of the owners of CrossFit Del Mar.

One of our first outreach projects was to establish a program that provided free CrossFit instruction to Wounded Warriors recovering at Balboa Naval Hospital in coordination with the Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Battalion, Quantico, Virgina. CrossFit Del Mar provided an environment whereby these Warriors – including many amputees – could come to a CrossFit "box" and get personalized instruction. One result of this program was that we sponsored a combat wounded Marine to participate in a national CrossFit competition held in South Carolina. Another result was that we acquired numerous quotas for these same Wounded Warriors to become CrossFit certified coaches, thanks to generous consideration from CrossFit Inc. We continue to support our Warrior athletes in any way possible.

CrossFit Del Mar has been a sponsor to many military fitness charity events/competitions including: 31 Heroes, Three Wise Men, and The Murph Challenge. We are proud supporters of The Semper Fi Fund, and Homes For Our Troops non-profit 501(c)3 - military charity organizations that help severely wounded military veterans. Our very first competition benefited the Challenged Athletes Foundation – which counts many military veterans as members.

We have active duty, reserve, and retired military personnel of all branches as CrossFit Del Mar members. We provide discounted membership rates and allow membership contract termination for any military reassignment or job related conflict.

Serving the Marines, military members, and families of the San Diego area – has always been a core philosophy at CrossFit Del Mar. We simply conduct business with the same ethics and values we have learned throughout a lifetime of military service to our country.
